How New Beginnings Imaging Brings 3D/4D Ultrasounds to Families Across Western North Dakota

There’s something just so delightful about seeing your baby before they’re born—the curve of a tiny nose, the wiggle of fingers, the gentle rise and fall of movement in the womb. For families in western North Dakota, that moment doesn’t have to happen in a busy clinic or cold exam room. Thanks to New Beginnings Imaging, expectant parents can now experience the wonder of 3D and 4D ultrasounds in the comfort of their own homes.

I connected with Amanda Olson, the heart behind this traveling ultrasound business, and her passion for creating warm, family-centered experiences shines through everything she does.

Ok, to be completely honest, this blog post has been in the works for the past 6ish months, with Amanda and I using all manner of modern technology as we collaborated to make it happen between our hectic individual schedules. I so appreciate her patience and resourcefulness!

Gone are the days where the tech just stares at the screen and tells you nothing. I believe ultrasounds should be comfortable, relaxed, and even joyful,” she says. “I like to explain what I’m seeing and invite families to ask questions. I want everyone to feel included.

A huge thank you to the Dworshak family for welcoming me into their cozy Dickinson home to grab a few photos of Amanda at work during their in-home ultrasound session!

That spirit of inclusion is clear from the moment Amanda walks through the door. She often connects her ultrasound machine to the family’s television, turning the living room into a private viewing theater. Siblings are encouraged to watch and ask questions, and yes—there are coloring books on hand to keep little ones occupied if needed. Whether the scan happens in the client’s home, her own cozy space, or a partner location like a hotel suite, the focus is the same: meaningful connection during one of life’s most tender transitions.

What Makes 3D and 4D Ultrasounds Different?

If you’ve only ever seen the flat, grayscale images from a traditional 2D scan, prepare to be amazed. A 3D ultrasound creates a lifelike image of baby’s features—adding depth and shape so you can see cheeks, noses, and tiny yawns. 4D takes it one step further, showing baby’s movements in real time. Think of it like a short movie clip of your baby stretching, turning, or sucking a thumb.

This technology also allows providers to view baby’s anatomy more clearly. For example, they can rotate and slice through 3D images to evaluate the palate and look for any signs of a cleft. It's not only sweet—it can be medically informative too.

Personalized Care, Brought to Your Door

While Amanda is able to travel anywhere for ultrasound services, she keeps a regular monthly schedule in Williston, Dickinson, and Bismarck, and visits Watford City twice a month to make her services more accessible and affordable for families. By grouping appointments in these areas, she can reduce travel fees for clients—and she often partners with local organizations to increase access even further. In Watford City, for example, McKenzie County Right to Life covers the cost of one 2D ultrasound per pregnancy, with the option to upgrade to a 3D/4D session for just $35.

In addition to elective ultrasounds, she is also able to perform diagnostic scans—like the 20-week anatomy scan or early dating scans—when ordered by a provider. These are full medical ultrasounds that are read by a radiologist and sent back to the client’s care team. Families get the added comfort of staying home, and providers get the images they need. It's a win-win. “I wish more people would take advantage of having their 20-week ultrasound done in their own home,” Amanda says. “It’s such an intimate, special experience to share with your loved ones.”

Timing, Preparation, and What to Expect

For the clearest view of baby’s features, the ideal time to schedule a 3D/4D ultrasound is typically between 26 and 28 weeks, when baby has developed enough to show off recognizable facial details and still has plenty of room to move. Another great window is 31 to 36 weeks, when baby’s face is rounder and more filled out—though movement may be a bit more limited by then. That said, scans can still be both beautiful and meaningful outside of these windows, and many families enjoy seeing baby even closer to their due date.

Amanda also offers early gender determination by ultrasound at 13 weeks, or by Sneak Peek Clinical Gender Test as early as six weeks.

Before the appointment, clients are encouraged to drink plenty of water for optimal image clarity. Those earlier in pregnancy may be asked to arrive with a full bladder. Sessions typically last between 20 and 45 minutes depending on the type of scan, and prices vary—starting at $100 for a first-trimester scan. “If baby’s in an awkward position, I have plenty of tricks,” Amanda comments. “Sometimes we roll mom from side to side, empty the bladder, or just take a break and try again.”

Reassurance and Safety

Understandably, some parents have concerns about the safety of 3D/4D imaging, especially since it’s often elective. But Amanda is quick to reassure: the machines are specifically designed to use the lowest settings possible while still capturing beautiful, detailed images. There’s no evidence that 3D or 4D imaging poses any risk to baby.

And as for the myth that all 3D/4D scans look the same? “A lot of it comes down to the skill of the person doing the scan, the baby’s position, the amount of amniotic fluid, and the maternal physique.” she explains. “Getting good images is part science, part art.”

A Heart for Families

When asked what led her to start this business, Amanda’s answer is simple: she loves this work. “I truly enjoy OB ultrasounds. I love connecting with families, answering questions, making it special for siblings. I believe these moments should be meaningful—not rushed or clinical.”

That passion shines through in every detail, from the gentle tone of her voice to the extra care she gives families navigating infertility or uncertain medical news.

If you’re expecting and curious about what your baby looks like, or if you just want to share the experience with loved ones in a familiar, cozy space—New Beginnings Imaging might be exactly what you’re looking for.
