How to Prepare Your Home for a Relaxed Newborn Photo Session | Dickinson Photographer

Imagine this: you’ve just had a baby, you’re running on scraps of sleep, and your toddler just face-planted into a bowl of Cheerios…and now you’re supposed to get your house “photo ready”? I get it. The idea of organizing, tidying, or preparing anything can feel impossible when life already feels like one big postpartum blur.

Here’s the thing...your home doesn’t need to look like it belongs in a magazine. When I walk into a space for a newborn session, I’m not looking for perfection - I’m looking for light, connection, and a space where you feel cozy and seen. That said, a few small tweaks can make a big difference in how relaxed you feel and how your photos turn out.

Let me tell you about one session that completely hit the sweet spot.

The Magic of a Simple Setup

I’ll never forget walking into a client’s home just outside of Dickinson. The baby was just a week old, the scent of warm coffee lingered in the air, and despite the inevitable newborn chaos, everything felt calm. The nursery and primary bedroom were tidy, bathed in soft natural light. Mom and Dad and Big Brother wore comfy, neutral-toned clothes (think cozy sweaters and cotton robes), and the mood was unhurried and grounded.

Was everything spotless? Probably not (I don’t actually look that closely). But the spaces we planned to use were clear of clutter, the baby was cozy and fed, and the vibe was exactly what it needed to be: real, warm, and unposed.

That’s what I want for you, too.

Shift the Focus From “Perfect” to “Peaceful”

Let’s be honest—the pressure for a “Pinterest-worthy” home is nonsense, especially in the first weeks postpartum. What your space really needs is room to breathe and soften. Most new parents feel at least a little overwhelmed at the thought of prepping their home for photos, but I promise, it’s easier than it sounds when you know what to focus on.

My approach to in-home newborn photography (in Dickinson, Bismarck, or wherever you are in western ND) isn’t about making your house look staged. It’s about creating space for connection.

So let’s get into the practical stuff.

My Go-To Tips for Getting “Photo Ready” (Without Losing Your Mind)

1. Focus on Just 1–2 Key Rooms

You do NOT need to clean your entire house. Truly.

Pick the spaces we’re likely to shoot in - usually the primary bedroom and/or nursery. If you can, also tidy the kitchen if you’d love to include something like a sweet kitchen sink bath. These are the spots where natural light often plays a starring role... and where baby snuggles happen most naturally.

Even if “tidying” means filling a laundry basket with random clutter and tucking it in the hallway closet (a personal favorite among my clients), that’s fair game. I’ve had clients pile dishes in the oven or gather toys into one big bin and shove it under the bed. Zero judgment here.

2. Clear Surfaces = Calmer Vibes

Uncluttered nightstands, changing tables, or counters help the eyes (and your nervous system) relax. No, we don't need to scrub every corner, but having surfaces clear of distractions lets the focus stay where it belongs: on your people.

Tuck away bright packaging, cords, and extra water bottles

Toss a cozy throw on the bed and fluff a pillow or two

And hey, if you want help with this part, I’ve worked with excellent postpartum doulas and local cleaning pros who can support you leading up to the session. It’s a gift worth giving yourself.

3. Dress for Comfort Over Style

Feeling beautiful doesn’t mean squeezing into something stiff or fancy. Choose clothing that feels like you—soft, loose pieces in neutral or earthy tones tend to photograph beautifully. Think linen gowns, waffle-knit cardigans, a simple robe with nursing access, or your favorite oversized sweater. Barefoot and relaxed? Chef’s kiss.

Baby can be in a simple onesie or just a diaper with a soft swaddle. This isn’t about picture-perfect. It’s about presence and real-life softness.

4. Plan a Little Something to Do

This one might surprise you: planning a tiny activity gives your session shape and gives your hands something to do.

Ideas:

  • A warm bath in the kitchen sink

  • Nursing or bottle-feeding snuggles

  • Reading a short book with your older child

  • Rocking in the nursery chair while baby dozes

These ordinary, simple rhythms carry so much beauty. And they help ease any nervous energy you might be feeling about being in front of the camera.

5. Let the Light Lead

There is magic in North Dakota light filtering through a hallway window, brushing across a nursery floor, or pouring in gently through your kitchen glass. You might be surprised by what areas we choose to shoot in based on the direction and warmth of the light that day.

If you’re not sure where the best light is in your house, I’ve got you. We’ll figure it out together when I arrive for your session.

It’s Not About Clean, It’s About Clarity

The truth is, it doesn’t matter if your toddler dumped toy bins all over the living room five minutes before I arrive. What matters is this: when you make just a little room to breathe, your body relaxes. And when you relax, your energy softens. Your connection flows more freely. And that’s when the most heartfelt images unfold.

We’re not staging your life. We are slowing it down for just a moment, so that you can actually feel what this chapter feels like—warm, wild, tender, and fleeting.
